Architecture Project I

Kids Educational Art Project sponsored by Arts in Stark
Cardboard sheets & box, cardstock, grass carpet, mini craft foliage, wooden people, fabric, mohair, air dry clay, acrylic paint, gems | 16”h x 12”h x 8d”

The 2nd graders at three Canton City Schools used their pre-geometry skills to create their own architectural dreamhouse.

Measuring was the main educational focus of this project, so they had to measure to find where to place the panes for their windows and understand basic wayfaring instructions on how to place the windows and doors. They also had to do some basic measuring in both imperial and metric systems to earn the eaves and roofs for their house. After putting in the mathematical work, then they were able to choose from a wide variety of craft foliage to decorate their houses.

All the students picked their own colors to paint the walls in their houses. Then they put their measuring skills to work again to calculate the measurements of each room to earn the flooring for each room. They also drew a mock grid, and after their success, received a grid and gems to make their own opus regulatum mosaic for their house.

After that, they had a huge variety of materials such as cardboard, fabric, chenille stems, air dry clay, fabric, and gems to cut and glue together to create scale furniture and characters for their house. This was really the time for their creativity to shine! They quickly figured out how to use these materials in unique ways to make their house a home.
