About Art Deco Mosaic Powder Room

This powder room in my Canton, Ohio home was my first interior design project since buying the house, completed in 2024. The room was in rough shape when I moved in, with damaged walls, uneven floors, and yes, carpeting. I knew from the start I wanted to transform it into something bold and jewel-like. My vision was a tiny Art Deco jewelry box of a room, and every decision I made was in service of that idea.

Designing Art Deco Mosaic Powder Room

The wall color came first. I chose Perfect Pout by Valspar, a deep magenta I have always loved, and painted the ceiling to match so the color would feel immersive rather than oppressive in such a small space. The mosaic floor and backsplash were designed around the wall color in the classic Art Deco scallop fan pattern, in iridescent stained glass and vitreous glass in white, magenta, grey, and black. Because the room is only 3 by 3 feet, I built a cardboard scale model before committing to the design, which led me to scale up the fan pattern to a larger size that read as more elegant and less busy in the space.

Creating Art Deco Mosaic Powder Room

The mosaic floor uses iridescent stained glass in white and magenta alongside smooth vitreous glass in grey and black. The glass that reads as magenta is actually red stained glass whose iridescent sheen makes it appear to match the wall color. White mortar was essential throughout since the iridescent glass would have looked dull and grey with a darker mortar underneath. The backsplash above the sink echoes the floor pattern with a centered peak motif, finished with malleable metal edging for a clean, easy to maintain border.
